Ganesh Chaturthi that commemorates the birthday of Hindu God Ganesh is around the corner. It is a 10-day long festival observed with great fanfare across states like Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. This year Ganesh Chaturthi begins on September 13 and will culminate on September 23, i.e. Anant Chaturdashi. Maharashtra and Karnataka will witness huge Ganesha pandals coupled with music, dance and related celebrations.
During the rituals, sweets, coconuts, and flowers are offered to the idol. The idols of Lord Ganesh are worshipped on all the ten days with pujas. The idol is immersed in water on Anant Chaturdashi. While some keep the idol for ten days, some prefer is keep it for lesser days. People pray to Ganesh to rid them of all their obstacles in their lives and for prosperity. Like any other Indian festival, food is an integral part of the celebration. Modakis a popular sweet dish prepared during the ten days of the festival.
Devotees chant 108 names of Lord Ganesha during the festival seeking blessings. Some of the common names by which Ganesha is known are Ganapati, Vinayaka, Maheshwara, etc. Gana in the word Ganpati means a group or a multitude. Some decipher the meaning of Gana as 'Lord of Hosts'
